We’re taking part in BIMA’s Digital Day 2016!

On 15th November we will be visiting Blatchington Mill School and Sixth Form to teach their students about careers in Digital as part of BIMA’s Digital Day 2016!

Digital Day

BIMA’s Digital Day is a nationwide event that encourages Digital Agencies to go back to school to inspire students to think about digital careers. The day is aimed at students 13-18 years old. They’ll enjoy talks about what we do at Angry Creative and how we got into our careers. Then they’ll get split into groups and enjoy fun games to encourage teamwork and a digital challenge that finishes with a Dragons Den style presentation. Our team will then choose a winning group of students who will be put forward to enter the national competition where they could win tickets to Thorpe Park, Vue cinemas and a cash prize of £500 to go towards IT and digital equipment for their school.

Simon, Tom Chute and Tom Still will be attending the event and are looking forward to inspiring the next generation.

Here’s what the team are looking forward to on the day:

The Brighton & Hove digital community is one of the strongest in the UK and there are so many opportunities here for young people. Digital Day is a chance to connect our home grown talent with local businesses, and give some insight into what it’s like to make a living in the technology industry.

Based on past evidence and the speed of emerging technologies, the likelihood is that the jobs that school children will be doing in 10 years’ time, simply don’t exist yet. So the challenge is understanding how to prepare for such a career.

My hope is that during Digital Day we can inspire students to think about the future beyond the existing job options, and try to build a basic skill set that will open up opportunities for a fruitful career in digital.

We engage with local education organisations to inspire the next generation of WordPress coders in Brighton. We’ve got some fantastic graduates from the universities, apprentices from local colleges and trainees from code clubs. By going along to Blachington Mill school and sharing our experiences, we hope that our stories will resonate with the students, and in a few years time they’ll want to explore careers in the digital industry locally – hopefully with us!

At such a formative age, it’s really important that students get a flavour for the type of digital careers available to them, and to feel inspired about entering our industry.
Personally, I had a fairly unorthodox journey into digital and I’m looking forward to sharing that with the students at Blatchington Mill School and Sixth Form.
As a company we’ve had great success in supporting and recruiting graduates from the local area, so the BIMA Digital Day 2016 is a fantastic opportunity for us to give back.

We’ll let you know how the event went on our blog so don’t forget to tune in again in late November to be updated!
