An informative, localised planning applications feature for Brighton and Hove Independent.

Brighton and Hove Independent are a free weekly local newspaper and online publication. They required a new feature for their site, in collaboration with B&H council, which would provide a single platform to inform residents of submitted planning applications.

Project Streetlamp is a subsection of the main site which we designed and developed in August 2014. As well as adding this subsection, we updated their original theme’s template and styling to support the new functionality and plugins.

Geo-location and mapping of planning applications within the local community

Using GEOmyWP, we embedded a map with pins displaying the locations of where planning applications had been submitted. Users could click on the pin to view a popup that indicated the exact address of the application, the ward it was located in, and the type of planning applications it was. Below the map we embedded a list view of the applications, along with an excerpt that included the same information as the pop-up. As well as searching on the map, users could also search by ward, conservation area, or type of application.

A dedicated page for each planning application

By clicking on the links in the map pop-ups and the list view excerpts, users could visit a dedicated page regarding the planning application containing further details. Within these individual planning application pages, we implemented social share links to allow users to share the information on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
Using Posts 2 Posts, Custom Post Types and Custom Taxonomies we were able to link the individual pages to each ward, conservation area and planning application type.

Keeping updated on planning applications in the neighbourhood

We integrated email marketing features into the planning application extension of their website so that users could sign up for planning application alerts. Using Gravity Forms for the alert signup process enabled users to receive notifications about planning applications in the whole of Brighton & Hove, or just for certain wards.
